This is the second part of a new series entitled: YHWH.
(Exodus 03:4-8a, 10-11, 13-16) When the Lord saw Moses coming to take a closer look, God called to him from the middle of the bush, “Moses! Moses!” “Here I am!” Moses replied. “Do not come any closer,” the Lord warned. “Take off your sandals, for you are standing on holy ground... I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” When Moses heard this, he covered his face because he was afraid to look at God... "I have come down to rescue them from the power of the Egyptians and lead them out of Egypt... Go, for I am sending you...” But Moses protested to God, “...Who am I to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt?” God answered, “I will be with you..." But Moses protested, “If I go to the people of Israel... they will ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what should I tell them?” God replied to Moses, “I am Who I Am. Say this to the people of Israel: I AM has sent me to you... Yahweh, the God of your ancestors... has sent me to you. This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations... I have been watching closely, and I see how the Egyptians are treating you.
Purpose of this series:
The purpose of this seven-part series is to remind us of God's attributes.
God is holy.
God is omnipotent.
God is omniscient.
God is omnibenevolent.
God is sovereign.
God is immutable.
God is omnipresent.
Why it matters:
The more we see God, the more we can see everything else.
Why should you care:
AW Tozer says, "What you think you about when you think of God is the most important thing about you."
YHWH. - Yahweh. - I AM.
Part Two: God is Omnipotent.
(Jeremiah 32:17-27) O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you! 18 You show unfailing love to thousands, but you also bring the consequences of one generation’s sin upon the next. You are the great and powerful God, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. 19 You have all wisdom and do great and mighty miracles. You see the conduct of all people, and you give them what they deserve. 20 You performed miraculous signs and wonders in the land of Egypt—things still remembered to this day! And you have continued to do great miracles in Israel and all around the world. You have made your name famous to this day.
21 “You brought Israel out of Egypt with mighty signs and wonders, with a strong hand and powerful arm, and with overwhelming terror. 22 You gave the people of Israel this land that you had promised their ancestors long before—a land flowing with milk and honey. 23 Our ancestors came and conquered it and lived in it, but they refused to obey you or follow your word. They have not done anything you commanded. That is why you have sent this terrible disaster upon them.
24 “See how the siege ramps have been built against the city walls! Through war, famine, and disease, the city will be handed over to the Babylonians, who will conquer it. Everything has happened just as you said. 25 And yet, O Sovereign Lord, you have told me to buy the field—paying good money for it before these witnesses—even though the city will soon be handed over to the Babylonians.”
26 Then this message came to Jeremiah from the Lord: 27 “I am the Lord, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me?
What does it mean to be Omnipotent?
To be Omnipotent is to be all-powerful. God is completely able to do all things within the context of His character. This is an important nuance because His character provides the guardrails for how He uses His power. For example, God cannot lie. God cannot fail. God cannot act against His own will. This does not mean God is limited. It means He limits Himself through His Divine nature and will.
Here are several verses that discuss the All-Powerful nature of God:
(Jeremiah 32:17) Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you
(Genesis 1:1–3) In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
(Isaiah 55:10–11) For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.
(Ephesians 1:11–12) In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory
(Proverbs 16:33) The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the LORD.
(Matthew 10:29–31) Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
God's Word teaches us the value of remembering God's Omnipotence in difficult times because...
(Verse 17-19) His power NEVER RUNS OUT.
Jeremiah is currently in prison for declaring the Word of the Lord. However, God is still with him in these dark moments. Jeremiah is praying and asking God to be with Him when everything seems to have gone crazy. In his prayer, the first thing Jeremiah does is to remind himself that God's power never runs out.
- Verse 17: "LORD"- Every time you see "Lord" in all caps, this means Yahweh.
- Verse 17: "Nothing is too hard for You."- Jeremiah is celebrating that God can do all things with equal ability.
- Verse 18: "Unfailing love"- Hebrew "hesed." This is one of the most celebrated characteristics of God by the people of God. His love never fails.
- Verse 18: "You also bring the consequences of one generation's sins upon the next."- This means that every generation is responsible for its own sin. If God punishes one generation for their sin, He will also punish the next generation. No one can blame another for the judgment they receive.
(Verse 20-23) His power IS AVAILABLE TODAY.
Jeremiah declares to the LORD and reminds himself that God has a long list of references that can speak to His power. That power was still working even to the current day, Jeremiah was praying. We can realize that His power is still at work even today.
- Verse 20: "All around the world."- Jeremiah is quick to include that God is not limited by time nor location.
- Verse 21: "mighty signs and wonders"- Many times, we forget that God's miracles are intended to show Himself to the natural world. They are signs of His power and presence.
- Verse 22: "this land that you had promised"- This is likely a painful statement because the land he is referring to is also the land he has prophesied is about to be lost to the Babylonians.
- Verse 23: "They have not done anything you commanded them."- Jeremiah is declaring that their trouble is not because God is limited in any way. It is because of their unwillingness to follow Him.
(Verse 24-27) His power turns our journey into a TESTIMONY.
Jeremiah gets to the main point of his prayer. The LORD has instructed Him to buy a piece of land that he knows the Babylonians are about to conquer. It seems like a bad investment. However, he has learned to trust the LORD and does so anyway.
- Verse 24: The city of Jerusalem is currently being besieged by the invading Babylonians. Siege warfare was common during that time. They would cut off all supplies and wait until the forces inside were weakened. This could either result in surrender or leave the vulnerable so easily overwhelmed in an attack.
- Verse 26: God reminds Jeremiah that He truly is all-powerful. After declaring the city will still fall, God also declares He will return the people to Jerusalem in time. This is a powerful promise that would have undoubtedly brought Jeremiah great comfort.
(Lamentations 3:21-24) I still dare to hope when I remember this: The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning. I say to myself, “The Lord is my inheritance; therefore, I will HOPE IN HIM!”
