Bottom Line
Does the Bible speak directly about abortion by name? No. Does the Bible speak about the value of innocent life inside the womb? Yes. I am Pro-Life because I believe it is the best way to honor all who are made in the image of God.
While there may be verses used to promote the ability of someone to make personal choices, there is not a single verse from God’s Word that promotes the murder of the innocent. Based on the Scripture below, God sees the human life inside the womb as alive and valuable.
- Jeremiah 1:5 says, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations."
- Isaiah 44:24 talks about God as "your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb."
- Paul says in Galatians 1:15 that God "had set [him] apart before [he] was born."
- Job 33:4 says, "The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life."
- Psalm 139:13-16 is a poetic description of life in the womb: "For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them."
There have been mountains of evidence put forward for both the pro-choice and pro-life stances. It would be pointless to try and point out all the studies that back up my pro-life point of view. So, here a “quick answer” section and posted resources to links for further study.
Quick Answer Guide to Know My Views
Question: When does life begin?
Answer: This is the big question. Most people I talk to do not feel comfortable aborting a baby if they think it is alive. That is why there are bans on abortion beyond a certain point. The big issue is it’s hard to prove the line between not alive and alive when it comes to those extreme early days. This is why it is best to go with conception.
Here is an example- Let’s say you’re driving down the road at night. Up ahead, you see something that might be a body laying in the middle of the road. Do you swerve to miss it or just plow right over it? Most people would say they would serve. Why? Because it MIGHT be a person. It’s worth doing whatever we can just in case that is a person in the road. That’s the same way I feel about abortion. We should do everything we can just in case it is a living person…. And it is.
Question: What do I care so much?
Answer: Since I believe life begins at conception, we are talking about protecting a human life. There is no life more precious than the innocent and vulnerable. I am passionate because babies in the womb cannot fight for themselves.
Question: What do I say to those Christians who are pro-choice because they do not want the government telling someone else what they can do with their body?
Answer: I get your desire to keep the government out of our every day lives as much as possible, but please pick another issue. You are not being consistent unless you also vote against seatbelt laws and drug prohibition. In both of those issues, the government tells us what we can and cannot do with our bodies.
Question: What is the difference between being anti-abortion and pro-life?
Answer: Anti-abortionist are interested in stopping the death of babies. Pro-life people go a step further. Pro-life advocates are interested in providing life for the baby after it leaves the womb as well. I’m not only interested in stopping death. My hope is to inspire life.
Question: What about in the case of rape or incest?
Answer: I despise those who victimize others. In the case of rape or incest, the guilty should be castrated and receive the death penalty. If you prey on those weaker than you, I have no use for you in society. That being said, we should not punish children for the sins of their broken fathers. The baby does not deserve the death penalty because of the worst day of the mother’s life. While it will be the hardest nine months that young mother may ever endure, the miracle is that baby will come out innocent and prove God can make something beautiful from something so ugly.
Question: What about the rights of the woman? (My body/My choice)
Answer: Women have the right to only have sex within the guardrails of a committed marital relationship. If a young lady decides to have sex outside the where sex is supposed to enjoyed, she is accepting the responsibility that goes with her decision.
Question: What role does/can the father play?
Answer: If a young man has impregnated a young woman who is not his wife, he is forever bound to that lady because of that baby. It is his responsibility to care for that young lady until she gets married and continue to help care for that baby until it is grown.
Question: What should happen to those who abort their babies?
Answer: This is a tough one because there is so much propaganda. To the young lady who has an abortion because she is misinformed, scared, or something similar… there is grace. We need to rally around her, comfort her, and help her walk in healing. However, to the young lady who believes it is murder but aborts the baby out of convenience, she should experience the same justice as anyone else who is an active participant in the murder of the innocent. I believe the latter is an extreme minority. I have heard stories of young women who are about to walk into abortion clinics, but are given an opportunity to hear their baby’s heartbeat. Once doing so, they cannot go through with it. They realize their baby is alive.
Question: Do I think pro-choice advocates focus on the women and pro-life advocates focus on the baby?
Answer: This has been thrown at pro-life people as a slur, but I think it is quite accurate. I am advocating for the baby. Besides extreme circumstances, the young woman has made her choice. We need to protect the baby until they can make a choice of their own. I’ll be they will choose to live.
